Anthony Sims
Artist Bio
Hailing from Wellington, New Zealand, Anthony Sims is multi-media artist, currently residing in Cork city. As a darkroom member of Backwater Artists, Anthony’s art practice is centred around process driven experimentation. Projects that involve less conventional ways to create photographs, such as constructing his own large format or pinhole cameras, experimenting with old, expired or damaged film or paper, broken cameras, alternative chemical methods of processing, and cameraless image creation, lie at the forefront of Anthony’s photography practice. Using an array of vintage, modern film, digital and handmade analog cameras, his art explores ideas and emotions of self identity, sexuality, mental health, gender, and a sense of personal consciousness.
Artist Statement
“My creative process is very much an extension of my emotional and mental state. I think when viewing this kind of art you understand that it is all about the feeling conveyed, rather than any kind of beauty or technical proficiency. In this context it almost goes without saying that self portraiture is a useful and engaging tool to create this expression, thus it is a recurring theme throughout my practice.”
