Rupture and Reshape – Art from 1960
Art History Lecture Series with Ciara Rodgers
Tuesday 8, 15, 22 October and 5 November 2024
In Person – Studio 12, 5:30- 6:30 pm
Backwater Artists Group Member Ciara Rodgers offers a four part lecture series focusing on one of the most significant decades in 20th-century art, the 1960s
The 1960s saw the shaping of new aesthetic styles and movements during one of the most influential cultural periods of the 20th century. Amid growing criticisms of established systems, the era saw student protests, the civil rights movement and the sexual revolution where artists experimented with new media and blurred the boundaries between fine and popular art.
Movements such as Pop Art, Minimalism, Conceptual Art, Fluxus, Performance Art and Arte Povera challenged systems which existed in the art world in a time period which redefined the concept of the art object, its existence, and its space. Due to its turbulent political and social events, 1960s art is often seen as a cut-off period when modern art ends and contemporary art production begins.
These lectures can be attended as a series or as standalone talks and are suitable for members interested in a refresher course or for art history beginners. Ciara Rodgers is a practicing visual artist and has lectured in Art History and Studio Modules at SETU Waterford since 2022.
