What We Do

Established by and for Artists, our primary focus will always be support and advocacy for Artists.

Backwater provides access to  affordable and vitally needed studio space, equipment and facilities relevant to artists needs. Our facilities include 28 high quality studio spaces, a darkroom, a digital suite and an exhibition/project space and a woodwork area. We facilitate in house and off site exhibition opportunities, and provide opportunities and provide a programme of learning and discursive events for artists to enable them establish and sustain a professional art practice. Through our exhibition and engagement programme, we provide an essential platform for showcasing contemporary art in Cork City, and we engage with audiences in an impactful way. 

STUDIOS

Backwater supports artists by providing high quality, affordable studio spaces. There are 28 studios in the complex, 6 scuplture and 22 painting/mixed media.

DARKROOM

Our darkroom invites associate members to avail of state of the art facilities including; enlargers, access to the full Adobe suite, Epson V750 Scanner, capacity to tray process colour prints, and 24hr usage.

BACKWATER ARTISTS NETWORK

The BAN supports artists and offers the opportunity to be part of our community, for artists who are working in isolation from studios at home or in private rented studios.

BURSARY & POST GRADUATE PROGRAMME

First established over in 1990, Backwater’s Bursary & Post grad programme has supported over 100 artists in the development of their careers.
