Backwater currently supports 43 artists working in many different disciplines including painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, metalwork, photography, mixed-media installation and new media. Membership of the group provides artists with access to a high level of professionalism and an invaluable platform from which to share skills and ideas and make contacts. It also enables studio artists to draw on our wealth of experience and expertise.
Our supports include:
- the provision of high-quality affordable studio spaces
- access to facilities relevant to artists individual needs including a darkroom, an exhibition/project space and a digital suite
- access to opportunities such as exhibitions, curators, professional development
- access to information
- promotion opportunities through our website and social media channels
- advocacy for artists
- supports for graduates through our Bursary and Post Graduate programmes
Backwater Bursary & Post Graduate Programme
Backwater supports emerging artists through our Bursary & Post Graduate programmes. First established in 1990 this programme has supported over 100 artists in the development of their careers. Backwater awards one Ciarán Langford Memorial Bursary Awards (6 months) to graduates of CIT Crawford College of Art & Design each year. As part of this award, an exhibition opportunity in our Studio 12 Project Space is also provided with associated mentorship and artists fee. We facilitate two CIT Crawford College of Art & Design Post Graduate Awards (9 months) which are awarded by CCAD. The provision of these awards are invaluable to the graduates and help ease the transition from student to professionally practising artist.
Backwater Artistic Programme
Through our Studio 12 exhibition/project space, we support studio and non-studio artists and aim to increase collaboration and engagement with the wider artistic community and the general public through exhibitions and outreach events.
Backwater Outreach events
Backwater facilitates outreach events, workshops, artists talks, panel discussions for members and the wider community in Studio 12. We also open for Culture Night (tours, workshops, demos), Heritage Day and for school/group/college tours (once a year, please email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information).
Backwater Artists Network
In 2020 we plan to expand our membership and offer some of the above supports and the opportunity to be part of our community, to artists in the wider community who are working in isolation from studios at home or in private rented studios. Please see Join Us: Network Members for more information.
