Backwater Artists Group is delighted to present, The Weight of Nothing, an exhibition by Backwater Artists Network member, Andrew Mc Sweeney.

Opening – 29 January 2025, 6pm
30 January – 21 February 2025
Studio 12, 1st Floor Backwater Artist Studios, Wandesford Quay.

This exhibition delves into the transformative interplay between objects, materials, digital processes, and experimentation, while also reflecting on the idea of nothing in both material and concept. Featuring an array of works—video simulations, drawings, and sculptural pieces—it investigates how digital tools can breathe new life into the physical world, reshaping materials in ways that challenge our perceptions of form, texture, and context.

The video simulations explore the relationship between organic and synthetic materials, blending tactile qualities with their digital counterparts. Sculptural works, inspired by photo scanned objects, reimagine materials entirely, presenting new forms and textures that transcend the limitations of the physical world. Meanwhile, a series of hybrid drawings merge traditional mediums with digital processes, fostering a dialogue between the tactile and the virtual.

At its core, The Weight of Nothing reflects on the creative potential of digital manipulation—not simply as a technological feat, but as a means to fundamentally alter how we perceive and work with materials. The exhibition invites viewers to consider the possibilities of reinterpreting nothingness—a space where absence becomes a catalyst for transformation.

About the artist:
McSweeney completed a BA in Fine Art at CIT Crawford College of Art & Design (2015) and an MA in Interdisciplinary Design Practice (2021) at the Limerick School of Art & Design. Recent projects include the XaRt commission (November 2023), developed in collaboration with the NExIS research team and the MTU Arts Office CREATE Le Chéile Fund, and an experimental video piece exhibited as part of 9.57 (SUNSET) during the Cork Midsummer Festival at the Triskel Arts Centre (June 2024). McSweeney also presented “Green World”, an interactive augmented reality application, at the Earth Rising: Eco Festival (September 2024) at the Irish Museum of Modern Art.

Eventbrite

Join us for an in conversation event with artist Claire Murphy & Helena Tobin (Director South Tipp Arts Centre), as they discuss Claire’s current solo exhbtion at Studio 12, Closing Of The Bones.

1:30pm-2:20pm

Studio 12

Backwater Artists Group

Cork City

Closing Of The Bones is a new 16mm film installation by Claire Murphy. The film is an exploration of childbirth by cultivating an environment that embraces the woman’s narrative and allows her story to resonate. The physicality of her journey is accentuated through meticulous care and attention devoted to her well-being. Through the act of sharing and establishing a nurturing and intimate space, women are empowered to assert ownership over their bodies and experiences.

__

The Closing Of The Bones ceremony originates in South America and is performed on a new mother soon after giving birth to her child. This ritual provides a place of support and care for the new mother. It acknowledges the labour the woman’s body has gone through in growing and birthing a baby and promotes healing to help the mother ‘come back’ into herself energetically and physically from the birth experience.

Join us for the closing event of Page / Process / Proceed. A Studio 12 Project with Ciara Rodgers, Kate McElroy, and Sarah Long, curated by Kim Crowley.

The project is a site-specific response to the Backwater Artists Group building through the activation of text-based instructions and visual scores. These instructions function as starting points for each artist to engage with their experience, occupying and working at the Wandesford Quay building.

The project is rooted in the idea of language as a raw material that can be manipulated, deconstructed and reconstructed. It focuses on the dual function of the printed page as a site of materiality and instruction. Embracing experimentation, unknowing, mistakes and curiosity, Page / Process / Proceed is a way for the artists to engage with an alternative mode of production focusing on process and experience.

Read more about the project and the artist here.

Permutations | Archival Imagery Workshop

Studio 12

Thursday 23rd Nov, 2-4pm

Spaces are limited, please RSVP here

Visitors are invited to come and observe the artist’s archival imagery indexing process mid-project on Thursday 23rd November. Participants will be asked to use available images to assemble temporary compositions that develop a relational aesthetic or imagined narrative between groups of images. This opportunity may be of interest to artists working with personal archives of materials, objects or imagery.

The emphasis will be on using collections of separate images almost in the same way that words are used to form a larger sentence, but without the destructive stage of cutting, glueing or splicing the visual elements. These compositions can then be photographically documented before the images are returned to the artist’s archive.
