Culture Night is an annual all-island public event that celebrates culture, creativity and the arts. This year, it will take place on Friday 16th September 2016. On Culture Night, arts and cultural organisations and venues of all shapes and sizes, including the National Cultural Institutions, extend their opening hours to allow for increased access to the public. Special and unique events and workshops are specifically programmed at participating locations and everything is available free of charge. Workshop 1: Kids Drawing Workshop

A chance to visit artist Jo Kelley’s studio and create large scale drawings in response to her work. Please bring an object/toy that is special to you. These drawings will be exhibited in our first floor corridor for the duration of Culture Night.


Workshop 2: Create a Giant Stained Glass Mural

The Stained Glass process will be explained to kids and they will create a large Stained Glass Mural on our Sculpture Block wall, which will remain throughout the month. This event is weather dependent.


Artists Talks
6.00pm – 6.20pm         Sean Hanrahan
Sean Hanrahan will give a talk on his experience of having a solo show in a foreign country. In 2014 he exhibited at The Centre for Contemporary and Modern Art, Vitebsk, Belarus.
6.30pm – 6.50pm         Cassandra Eustace
“Was it worth going to the Berlin Biennale?”  Cassandra Eustace welcomes you to her studio where she will share her research on Berlin’s 9th Biennale, which she attended a few weeks ago.
7pm – 7.20pm              David Barrett
7.30pm – 7.50pm        John Kent
Artist John Kent will talk about how he makes work; the conceptual and practical processes in creating and developing his paintings.

Eimear Kavanagh

Eimear Kavanagh is a mixed media artist from UK currently on a Studio Exchange from Road Studios, Liverpool. She will be demonstrating some of her experimental and spontaneous mark-making techniques.


Built Heritage Tour
With archaeologist Caen Harris

Nestled in a peaceful meander of the south channel of the River Lee, the buildings that house the Backwater Artists Group, Cork Printmakers and the CIT Wandesford Quay Gallery serve as a physical reminder of the former industrial nature of the Wandesford Quay and Crosses Green area. To celebrate this vital part of our shared cultural heritage Caen Harris, an industrial archaeologist and doctoral candidate with the Dept. of Archaeology, UCC, will present a brief tour of the premises, highlighting key aspects of the site’s built heritage.


Studio Tours

There will be tours of the artists studios every half hour from 6pm. This is a great opportunity to explore our studios, meet our artists and see how they work. The last tour leaves the front door at 8.30pm.
