Artist Statement

My work creates visceral images of movement, gesture and pose. Drawing is where I begin, collaborating with the model to find innovative postures that challenge the body as a fixed entity or object. When marking the paper or canvas , I seek to reduce the body to it’s essential vectors- breath, stillness, movement. Influenced by Francis Bacon, Anthony Gormley, Jenny Saville and Rodin, I strive to create works that invite the viewer to consider the movement of the body through space and the power of the body in it’s stillness; examining the ways in which gesture is simultaneously mechanical and emotional.
