Artist Statement
I am a painter. I work both outdoors and in my studio where I use field studies and photo references. Fieldwork is crucial, helping me focus my mind to explore how a particular scene can evoke an emotional response. Working on a number of paintings simultaneously allows me to transport certain elements from one piece to the next. I analyse, plan and imagine what I want to do in painting. Some subjects work best as small paintings, some as large. I will often add an element that better compliments the colours and values of the painting. Changes that will enhance or strengthens a painting are considered and then employed to that end. Although the Irish landscape has been my main interest for a number of years, drawing the figure has led to a fascination with figurative and portrait painting. Something I am constantly exploring. I also regularly paint still life.
