Cathryn O Sullivan
Artist Bio
Cathryn O Sullivan is a Visual Artist based in Cork, and a recent graduate from Crawford College of Art and Design, earning a First-Class Honours Degree in Fine Art. Cathryn’s practice uses sculpture, photography and drawing to explore the Metaphysical world. Her process involves a deeply embodied experience of gathering and constructing, in order to deconstruct, not only on a physical level but on an inward level so the true form can emerge. This is very much experienced as an alchemical process. The objects and materials become an extension of sensation and thought whilst also maintaining their own autonomy and presence, as they are elevated to their rightful place in space through a ritual of becoming.
Artist Statement
My work aims to address the loss and rupture of a sacred continuum within society due to the speeding advancements in technology, which is undermining our natural instincts and what it means to be human. We need to change direction from one that’s overly focused outward on technology to the inward space of the heart where discord between the body, spirit, and our environment can begin to heal. This is essential if we want to create a harmonious and balanced society. My ideas and concepts stem from my experiences around ritual and ceremony, and the alchemical process that takes place within them. Found objects together with welded and handmade structures serve as a metaphysical antenna, creating a ritualistic and sacred interplay between the inner and the outer worlds. Ancient Alchemical texts Aswell as writings on the Occult and Theosophy have influenced my process.
