Backwater Artists studio members Fiona Kelly, Johnny Bugler and Conall Cary and past member Dominic Fee will soon be exhibiting in Ratamo Galleria, Jyväskylä, Finland (22/09/16 – 16/10/16) as part of the YOU MAKE MINE/ I MAKE YOURS project, previously exhibited in the CIT Wandesford Quay Gallery (05/05/16 – 29/05/16). The artists received Culture Ireland funding to travel with the exhibition to Finland where they have been invited to a reception with the Irish ambassador Mr. Colm Ó Floinn. They will then travel to Jyväskylä in the western part of the Finnish Lakeland. This exhibition also features the work of four Finland based artists; Naoji Ishiyama, Tuomas Hallivuo, Aino Kaarina and Jyrki Markkane. The opportunity for Contemporary Irish Artists to exhibit alongside these internationally renowned and awarded Printmakers is vital to promote and showcase the strength of contemporary Irish Printmaking.

The primary intention of this project was to explore the individual working processes of contemporary printmakers from the initial concept through to its final realisation. This was a visual, technical and conceptual collaboration between four selected couples from Ratamo and Cork Printmakers. Each pairing created a visual dialogue, comparing two unique visions, two unique processes, whilst working through one idea. Each selected artist produced a plan for a work. This plan was to be a visual representation of how they formed an idea, exposing sketches, which described their concept and personal idiosyncratic working processes. The plan was sent to their partner who interpreted and developed it in their own way. Both artists produced both plans using their own visual dictum.

This process of exchange, discussion and collaboration is intended to give a keen insight into contemporary printmaking processes, how the medium realises a concept and pushes the boundaries of each artist’s working practice.

YOU MAKE MINE/ I MAKE YOURS will be a fringe event to the Scandinavian Graphica Creativa International Print Triennial, 2016. Graphica Creativa is the oldest international print exhibition within the Nordic countries.
