Tina Whelan works in a variety of mixed media, fusing paint, print, and fiber fluidly through a variety of complex processes. In her latest work she is seeking a material language to express bodily harm, pain and hurt, giving voice where voices have been silenced.
Formerly earning her BA in Fine Art as a painter (University of Ulster, Belfast 1986), the last decade has seen the artist turn her gaze to fiber art/textiles, culminating in a MA by Research through textiles (CIT Crawford College of Art & Design, Cork, 2018-2019). Her MA entitled ‘The Irish Uterus’ deals with the social realities of the Irish womb from 1916 onwards. Its main focus is on the impact of national ideology and Catholic ethics on Irish obstetrics, particularly viewed through the lens of the symphysiotomies that occurred in Ireland from 1940 to 1990. She questions the ideologies that informed our national identity, which was in part a sexual and moral purity, enacted and problematised through women. She critiques the shadows of Irish Statehood, looking at symphysiotomies and how they were deployed in the inscribing of religious, national and medical power on Irish women’s reproductive bodies.
The exhibition ‘Re-Dressing from the Inside Out’ occurs at the half-way mark in the MA research and will represent its findings and failings to date. The artist aims to connect and engage with the public, exposing her processes and inviting responses to her ‘thus far’ palette & path.
*Prof Linda Connolly is a sociologist. She is the director of the Social Sciences Institute at Maynooth University and has authored a number of books and articles on Irish women’s social and political rights.
