Studio 12 Project Space, 1st Floor, Backwater Artists Group, Wandesford Quay, Cork
Backwater Artists Group presents ‘Overlooked’ an exhibition of urban landscape paintings by Cork-based artist Gerard O’Callaghan, a 2016 recipient of the Backwater Studios Graduate Residency awarded by CIT Crawford College of Art & Design.
This exhibition marks the first use of a new project space developed by Backwater Artists Group in what was studio number 12. The space will function as a project and exhibition space, a communal meeting point and a venue for hosting talks, events and workshops.
Gerard O’Callaghan depicts the local urban landscape in particular quiet, unoccupied spaces framed by architectural features and buildings, “the many bones of the stone and concrete skeleton of the city”. Free from human subjects a scene is often reduced to a geometrical arrangement of blocks of colour and texture, enhanced or altered by shifts in artificial or natural light. The artist responds in a spontaneous manner in order to capture and interpret one or more moments in the history of a space but in the end viewers are left to interpret their own narrative.
Since graduating from CIT Crawford College of Art & Design Gerard O’Callaghan has exhibited in Ireland, UK and France and has work in private, corporate and public collections.
