To become a full time member of Backwater Artists Group you must be a full time professional practising artist.

The criteria for membership is: (a) The artist must be willing to commit time to the activities of the group and use the studio space. (b) Allocation of spaces is conditional on a proven need for working studio space. (c) The Artist is a Professional Practising Artist. (d) Availability of studio space.

The artists needs are an integral part of our ethos and we recognise the importance of keeping the studios affordable. Fees are kept to a minimum. Studios are reasonably priced at €135 (single occupancy)/€140(shared occupancy, €70 per person) per month.

Our 23 Licenced studios are made available for 4 years, 8 years and 12 years. We usually put out an open call for these studios approximately every two years. To apply you need to fill out an application form and if you are shortlisted, you will have to attend for interview.  Backwater will advertise for the next round of available 4 year licences in January 2020. We will have 2 x sculpture studios and 2 x painting/mixed media studios available.

Our short-term studios ensure a steady flow of artists through the studios. The short-term studios operate off a waiting list, when one becomes available, we offer it to the next person on the list. Studios are for 3-6 months. There are 5 of these studios available each year.

In any one year up to 65 artists access the studio space. We also facilitate short residencies for non studio artists who are exhibiting in Studio 12.

To apply for a short-term studio(3-6 months), please download the application form here application 2019 (doc),  application 2019 (pdf) and email it to admin@backwaterartists.ie

All artists must commit to the activities of the group. Our members help out with openings, invigilation of our exhibition space, Studio 12, they serve on committees, they organise exhibitions/events for the group and some members serve on the board of directors. We welcome applicants from artists who have a diverse range of skills such as graphic design skills, fundraising skills etc which would be beneficial to the organisation.
