Chris Samuels

“Most of my work references time and perceived time. This may be as literal as making clocks, but goes deeper than that. Whilst working as a Jewellery designer in the 1980’s in Birmingham I made a themed piece about ‘Time’ for an exhibition. This first clock I made sent me on a path that has become more defined over the years. The clocks I make all have an element of disintegration, with many references to time both historical and personal.”

Chris Samuels was born in Liverpool in 1962. He completed a College Foundation Course in Liverpool in 1981 and received a BA in Jewellery, Silversmithing & Design in 1984. He was self-employed as a jewellery designer in Birmingham until 1990 when he moved to Ireland and joined the Backwater Artists Group, serving on the Board for 10 years. He now teaches jewellery and metalwork in St. Johns College, Cork.
